Why Ravi Shastri was chosen as India's cricket team head coach
The three-member cricket advisory committee comprising Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaikwad and Shanta Rangaswamy has re-elected Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Since the process started, the selection of Ravi Shastri was considered as ever since. It is also natural for this selection process to have a 'formality' stamp. But the likes of skipper Virat Kohli, good communication skills and understanding of the problems in the team, were favorable for Shastri's selection. Shastri had taken over as the director of the team during the difficult period from August 2014 to March 2016. During this time, Mahendra Singh Dhoni decided to retire from Test cricket, focusing only on limited-overs cricket. Similarly, Kohli-Dhoni was also on the verge of disagreement. Then on January 2017, Dhoni also took the limited overs captains. The sources of Indian cricket's leadership transitioned from Dhoni to Kohli during this time. Kohli's dominance increased.
For selection process, the committee considered the five factors as guiding information, training experience, achievement in training, communication and modern training methodology. Compared to the other coaches in the head coach, the experience of representing India and coaching in the Twenty20 League excludes the experience of Ravi Shastri. During his tenure as Shastri's team director and head coach, India jumped to the forefront in both Test and ODI cricket. India have won five of seven Test series since July 2017. Of these, the most important thing is to win a Test series in Australia.
Ravi Shastri plays a key role in enhancing the performance of the players. The fast bowler, Mohammed Shami, stayed with Shami during this challenging period when his wife tried to get him involved in a legal case. Due to the loss of tone, Cheteshwar Pujara was finding it difficult to maintain a place in the Test team of India. But the third-ranked batsman helped Ravi Shastri restart the squad. Ravi Shastri plays a key role in Dhoni's career in preparing for Rishabh Pant, bringing in fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah into Test cricket and moving towards becoming the perfect all-rounder for Pandya. During Ravi Shastri's tenure many young players had the right opportunity. With the coordination of the captain and selection committee, Ravi Shastri has tried more than 40 young players.
The Indian team faces many challenges till the Twenty20 World Cup. Best wishes to Ravi Shastri, who has been re-appointed as Head Coach as per the BCCI Constitution's selection process.
